Remember back when we got in the house and got our first glimpse at what was under the living room carpeting?

Unfortunately, that was the only room we could salvage the hardwoods in. The rest were covered with linoleum that had such a thick layer of glue, it was like tar. Ick!

As for the rest of the floors in the house, you’ve seen our hexagon tile pick for the full bathroom floor here. And my painted bedroom floor here. And the trials and tribulations of hand sanding the third floor guest room here. As for the rest of the first floor, we’ve chosen a beautiful Brazilian Cherry for the entry, kitchen, and dining room. We ran it through the hallway on the second floor as well.

Here’s the kitchen and below that, the entry. Notice the pattern of wide and thin planks? I think it adds so much interest and character.

A thin sanding and coat of walnut stain will darken these slightly though we will still have the varying lighter and darker pieces but that’s what makes a hardwood floor so fabulous!

Now back to that living room floor we discovered on day one. The floor has a patch or two but it’s still in great condition. When we tore down the horsehair plaster walls, we created a gap between the floor and the walls which we filled with a border of new fir.

Here it is unfinished with the new plank border.

And now…

So so pretty. It’s even darker in person which I love. It has so many color variations I think it will look great with everything we’ve chosen for the room.

And here it is up against the new Brazilian Cherry. Needs a good Swiffer but you can see the new border blends in so nicely with the old and acts as a nice transition since we shifted the Brazilian Cherry to run vertically through the length of the house.

I’m really quite happy with our choice of flooring and I can’t wait for the stain to go down and these floors to finally be shiny and sawdust free!
