A couple weeks ago I told you (here) about my goal to get the third floor done. Well it’s not quite done but there’s been a ton of progress.
In the guest room I put two coats of Kilz primer on all the baseboards and around the door and window. Then I painted the trim a true white with a pearl finish to hide any imperfections. And finally painted the entire room Benjamin Moore’s Snowfall White.
That was the easy part. Next came the floors. The fir floors weren’t in the best shape but I thought they were worth saving. There were some dark spots and lots of paint in the corners (not from me thank-you-very-much!) but I thought it could be sanded.
And it could! But it was the biggest pain in the ass and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. It took the better part of three Saturdays but I used an electric hand sander on my hands and knees on every inch of that damn floor. I got smarter after day two and wore knee pads but still. It wasn’t a pleasant experience.
At least it’s done and I have these before and after photos to admire! Here’s a particularly bad corner of the room.
And here it is after!
This was the room before painting and sanding…
Before painting and sanding…
And after…
I also removed all those little troll doors and painted them the same pearl finish as the trim and the hinges and knobs a satin nickel. After a coat of clear polyurethane on the floor, I’ll put them all back and finally begin to put a room together!
