That’s How We Roll

Last month, we bought this trunk at the Vintage Bazaar in Salisbury, MA. We absolutely love it for a coffee table but we agreed it needed to be more mobile. Four casters were an easy addition. Not only is it now easy to move around but it’s nice to have that couple inches of space under it for your toes!

The Tile Shop Part Deux

With blue boards going up and walls in our future, that means tile is fast approaching. The Tile Shop has quickly become one of our favorite vendors because of their huge selection of gorgeous marble, porcelain, and slate tiles. And with Dad’s contractor discount, our selections are miraculously within our budget.

And to save even more, we’ll be doing the tiling ourselves. (Now I know I have a tile expert that subscribes to this blog so Chris- feel free to chime in here on DIY tiling!) The Tile Shop offers free classes every Saturday at 9:30a. Some expert advice along with Dad’s supervision and my meticulous quest for perfection, I think we should have no trouble at all. Especially with the simple tiles we’ve chosen. Take a look at our tile picks…

Make it Work!

I had to channel Tim Gunn for this project and “Make it Work!” Since we’re trying not to spend any of our current renovation budget on the third floor, I thought I’d revamp the lights that were already in there with a little spray paint.

Jared uses these round ceiling lights in a lot of his rentals and we always refer to them as “boob lights” because… well, use your imagination.

So I removed these lights from two rooms and had myself a nice set of… uh, err, lights. I cleaned out the glass portion of the bugs and critters that a little too literally went toward the light. And then placed the brass parts out on some newspaper on the lawn.

I used the same Rust-oleum Universal Metallic spray paint in Satin Nickel that I used here. And again, I love how this covers and the sheen it has. After we paint these rooms, I’ll put these back on the ceiling with pride. Pretty nice boob job, eh? Tee hee.

Getting Crafty

Remember these?

IMG_0823 IMG_0824

I finally got around to cleaning them up and giving them a fresh coat of spray paint!  And while I was at it, I wanted to give a little pick me up to some other miscellaneous items.

I use a lot of cans and little jars to organize the arsenal of things it takes to get me looking decent every morning. Since we went with the antique bronze look for the bathroom fixtures and an open vanity and linen closet, I want everything to look cohesive. Even if it is just a coffee can holding my hot flat iron!

So I gave everything a good scrubbing – especially the anchor and bell – and taped off any glass parts and placed them all out on the lawn on newspaper. After a good two coats and a third to get all the nooks and crannies I missed, they started looking pretty classy.

IMG_0829They are definitely not as glittery as they look in the photos. The sun just picked up all the flecks in the metallic spray. But I am quite impressed with the paints I selected. Rust-oleum Universal Metallic spray paints covered well and gave a genuine metallic finish. Above is Satin Nickel and below is Oil Rubbed Bronze.

IMG_0831 IMG_0832 IMG_0838 IMG_0840The bronze really made my dinky little bathroom accessories look heavy and as a collection, they really do have a high end look. Not bad for $14 worth of spray paint.
